Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity is a serious health issue that affects a child’s physical and emotional wellbeing.  Obese children have an increased risk of suffering from asthma, joint problems, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  These kids are often bullied or teased – and they are more likely to isolate or suffer from low self-esteem and depression.
Data shows that over 18% of children and teens in the U.S. are obese (children who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile as compared to their peers).   And nearly 1/3 of all U.S. children are considered overweight (BMI above the 85th percentile, and below the 95th percentile.) Overweight kids are more likely to become overweight adults.

Genetics and metabolism can play a role in obesity along with diet and physical activity.  Race and socioeconomic statusare also factors in the prevalence of childhood obesity
If your child is overweight or obese, you may wish for a quick and easy solution to weight loss. There are plenty of fad diets and supplements that promise fast results and they may be tempting. But working with your Pediatrician and using programs that are based on credible, scientific evidence offer the best chance of long-term success for your child

To help children maintain a healthy weight, balance the calories they eat and drink with the calories they use through physical activity and normal growth.  We all know that we should eat more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins and limit sugar – in food and beverages.  Watch portion sizes and encourage the whole family to drink plenty of water.
Our goal when helping overweight children is to reduce the rate of weight gain while allowing for normal growth and development. Children should not be placed on a weight reduction diet without first talking to your Pediatrician.  Please contact us if you have concerns about your child’s weight.
